The starting pitcher is the key to any MLB team’s success. There are a lot of pitchers who can get the ball every five days, but only a few of them consistently do well. In the odds for the 2022 MLB Cy Young, the best pitchers stand out.
Updated Cy Young odds from OKbet show Astros starting Justin Verlander leading the American League and Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara leading the National League. The top Cy Young betting possibilities are broken down here, along with some value selections.

Why is Verlander the AL Leader? Odds for the Cy Young Award

Justin Verlander has thrown six innings in the previous two years as of 2022. He’s 39 years old, in his 17th season, and has almost 3,000 innings under his belt. Verlander had every incentive to be sloppy this year, as he worked his way back from significant surgery. Instead, he’s been the finest pitcher in baseball, and his Cy Young chances have risen.
Verlander has averaged over seven innings each start in 21 games, producing a 15-3 record and the highest ERA in baseball (1.85). Barring an injury, it’s difficult to imagine anybody overtaking him this year since the data and story are too compelling.
Kevin Gausman is the AL Cy Young odds-on favorite
Even if his luck hasn’t always been on his side this season, Kevin Gausman has been one of the AL’s greatest pitchers. Despite having baseball’s top FIP (2.08), he has a 3.16 ERA and an 8-9 record.
Gausman has been the most useful pitcher in the American League in terms of fWAR, and if he has some luck in his next few starts, he might push himself into serious AL Cy Young odds contention.
Who Are the MLB National League Cy Young Odds Favorites?
Player | Odds |
Sandy Alcantara | -300 |
Corbin Burnes | +750 |
Max Fried | +1600 |
Zack Wheeler | +2500 |
Carlos Rodon | +2500 |
Tony Gonsolin | +2800 |
Joe Musgrove | +3300 |
Aaron Nola | +4000 |
Max Scherzer | +4000 |
Sandy’s Loss for the National League Cy Young Award
Although his strikeout totals aren’t very high, Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara is now well in control of the Cy Young odds and leads almost all other significant NL pitching categories this season.
The 26-year-old has established himself as one of baseball’s top pitchers this season with a league-best 1.92 ERA, 173 innings worked, and three complete games. Even though he only strikes out 7.9 hitters per nine innings, it’s unlikely that anybody will surpass Alcantara unless there is a late-season collapse.
Tony Gonsolin, NL Cy Young Odds Value Pick
Given his 14-1 record on the mound, Tony Gonsolin would be the clear favorite for the NL Cy Young Award right now if this were 2002 as opposed to 2022.
Gonsolin has been the most effective starter on a fantastic Dodgers club, and he is subtly lurking in NL Cy consideration with the best record in the NL and a 2.24 ERA. He doesn’t come close to matching the number of strikeouts or innings thrown of some of these other top rivals, but since he has the lowest WHIP and the most victories in the NL, he represents a reasonable bargain going forward.
