Last year, the top clubs in baseball, such as the Giants and Rays, dominating the series openers. This year, three of the best teams the Dodgers, Mets, and Yankees have all dominated series openers. In fact, the Mets have won their previous seven series openers.

Although there haven’t been many strange blips in the series opener patterns so far, one item to notice is the Athletics’ complete inability to start a series. While the A’s have a 35.7 percent victory record overall, they are nearly 10 percentage points poorer in series openers. The A’s may grow worse now that top starter Frankie Montas has been moved.

The Cleveland Guardians were a sub.500 club last year, but they were the greatest team in baseball in the last game of a series. There hasn’t been a clear close-out money-maker so far this year.

On the other hand, the Cardinals’ troubles in the last game of a series are noteworthy. This year, St. Louis is a good squad, sitting at 63-51 and dominating the NL Central. The Cardinals, on the other hand, are among the worst in baseball when it comes to finishing series, with a victory rate that is about 15 percentage points worse than their season number. You can bet all you want on the Cards this year, but they’re worth a fade to close off a series.
